Driving from Los Angeles to Las Vegas is a popular trip, and many visitors rent a car to do it. The drive is roughly four hours without traffic, but weekends and holidays can make it much longer.
Before you book
- Check whether the rental company allows driving between states and whether there are mileage limits
- Compare pickup in Los Angeles and drop-off in Las Vegas. One-way rentals can add a fee, so compare the total price
- Choose a car that is comfortable for a long drive and has enough luggage space
Plan the drive
- Leave early to avoid heavy traffic, especially on Fridays and Sundays
- Fill up the tank and bring water, because the desert has long stretches between towns
- Plan a rest stop partway through
- Use a map app for current road conditions
When the car makes less sense
- If you are only staying on the Las Vegas Strip, a car can add parking costs, so check your hotel fees
- If you prefer not to drive, compare bus or train options
