Tampa Car Rental: Tampa or Clearwater Beach?

Short answer: on Florida's Gulf side, a car is close to essential. Tampa's sights, the cruise port and the beach towns are spread across the bay from each other, and the split-stay decision — city nights in Tampa, beach nights in Clearwater or St. Pete Beach — only works with wheels. The good news: Tampa International (TPA) is one of the easiest rental airports in the country.

Planning tips

  1. TPA's rental center connects to the terminal by the SkyConnect train — returns are painless, but on cruise-mornings and holidays the return lines grow; the small trick is returning the night before a morning flight or sailing and taking the hotel shuttle instead
  2. The causeways across the bay (Courtney Campbell, Howard Frankland, Gandy) are the rush-hour bottlenecks — schedule beach moves late morning, not 8 a.m.
  3. Beach-town parking fills by late morning in season — a car gets you there, an early start gets you parked
  4. Sunshine Skyway to Sarasota and the south is a toll bridge — most rentals bill it electronically; ask how tolls are handled at the counter

Where to stay on the Gulf side

Downtown Tampa and the Riverwalk for the city-and-cruise trip, Clearwater Beach for the full beach holiday, St. Pete Beach or downtown St. Petersburg for the mix of beach days and evenings with actual restaurants and museums. All three bases are an easy drive from TPA — the choice is about which mornings you want to wake up to, not about distance.
