Do You Need a Rental Car in Washington, DC?

Short answer: no for the classic DC trip. The National Mall, the (free) Smithsonian museums and the monuments are built for walking and the Metro, downtown parking is scarce and expensive, and the traffic is exactly as bad as you have heard. A car is for the day trips out of the city, not the city.

Where to stay in Washington, DC

Choose by Metro line, not by neighborhood name. Downtown and Penn Quarter put the Mall at walking distance at business-hotel prices. Dupont Circle (Red Line) is the neighborhood-feel base — bookshops, cafes, embassies. Capitol Hill trades hotel polish for rowhouse streets and Eastern Market mornings. Across the river in Arlington — Rosslyn and Crystal City — rooms are often cheaper, parking is easier, and the Mall is still just a few Metro stops away.
