Do You Need a Rental Car for Zion & Utah's Mighty 5?

Short answer: yes — even though Zion Canyon itself runs on shuttles. The park shuttle only covers the canyon floor; getting to Springdale, reaching the east side and Kolob Terrace, and stringing Zion together with Bryce, Capitol Reef, Arches and Canyonlands is a driving trip by definition.

Driving the loop

  1. Zion to Bryce Canyon is roughly 1.5–2 hours via the Zion-Mt. Carmel tunnel — one of the great short drives in the parks system.
  2. Give the full five-park loop at least 5–7 days. The classic mistake is one night per park; the driving days are part of the trip, not a commute.
  3. Angels Landing requires a permit won in a lottery — apply before you build the rest of the plan around it.
  4. Fuel up and download maps in the gateway towns. Services and cell signal thin out fast between parks.

Where to stay for Zion

Springdale sits at the park's south entrance: walkable to the shuttle stops and the visitor center, with the best choice of lodges — at the highest prices in the region. The in-park Zion Lodge is the only stay inside the canyon and books out far ahead. St. George, about an hour away, is the value base with chain hotels and real restaurants. Kanab is the loop player's base — between Zion, Bryce and the Grand Canyon's North Rim, with small-town prices.
